AI for Creative Skill Development: A State-of-the-Art Analysis on Current Theories and Approaches

Abstract:

Recent advances in the field of artificial intelligence and, in particular, the rapid and pervasive spread of generative artificial intelligence tools, pose numerous significant challenges to the education field. Research activity in this area is generally aimed at understanding the impact of such innovations on learning and teaching processes and investigating what strategies to adopt to best guide such transformations. In particular, when it comes to analysing the interplay between generative AI and creativity, the need to understand the effect of such technologies on the development of students’ creative skills in the short and long term is compounded by the need to investigate whether and how generative AI can be used to foster the development of such skills. This work, after presenting the main theories on creativity and creative education and providing a historical overview of the origins and evolution of generative AI, analyses the most relevant contributions in the field related to the use of generative AI tools, in general, with respect to the broad field of education and, specifically, in relation to the promotion of creative skills. Regarding this last point, the conducted analysis highlights the embryonic state of the sector and outlines a possible perspective for the development of research in this field.
