Gender Stereotypes and Prejudices: An Analysis on the Representation of High School Teachers

Abstract:

Gender stereotypes exert a profound influence on social interactions, contributing to the phenomenon of gender inequality (Fierli et al., 2015) and shaping our way of perceiving and interacting (Biemmi, 2017; Ghigi, 2019). School, along with the family, plays a privileged role in gender education. It is the context where the identity of girls and boys is formed and where the first forms of socialization outside the family nucleus begin. Through the administration of a semi-structured questionnaire (Mantovani, 1998; Zammuner, 1998), this exploratory study aimed to investigate the opinions of one hundred high school teachers regarding gender stereotypes, as they may influence educational practices. The research objective was to explore their opinions and their representation in both personal and school dimensions in order to provide theoretical considerations and pedagogical guidelines on the subject.
