Italian Primary School Assessment: pupils’ perceptions through a mock test

Abstract:

Italian primary school assessment is under constant scrutiny, particularly with the Senate's approval of Bill 924-bis amending O.M. 172/2020. This amendment replaces achievement levels with descriptive assessment.  Assessment relies on quantitative and qualitative data gathered by teachers through written and oral tests (Parmigiani, 2014).  Assigning value through these judgments to specific learning aspects poses a significant challenge for teachers (Benvenuto, 2007). Pupils can provide more insightful data through self-assessment forms (Girelli, 2022). These forms help them become aware of their own progress, achievements, and areas needing improvement (Baldassarre, 2010). This study explores primary school pupils' perceptions of assessment.  We employed a unique approach by administering a "mock" test to investigate what pupils think about assessment, how they experience it, and how they imagine it.
