The freedom to experiment: the skills of the child and the guiding role of the adult in active outdoor play

Abstract:

Active outdoor play is vital for the healthy development and well-being of children. This study emphasises the importance of a balanced approach that promotes children's independence as competent and fully capable individuals and recognises the crucial role of adults, who support and enhance these abilities. The analysis of two distinct conceptual models shows which factors determine children's approach and adults' beliefs about risky play. These elements can be useful in predicting how teachers and parents will behave in relation to adventurous games that activate competence and autonomy in children.
