The non-verbal communication of the teacher in the classroom

Abstract:

The work intends to contribute to promoting pedagogical research on the teacher's non-verbal communication during the lesson. There is, in fact, a general lack of attention to this area in teacher training at all levels, at least in the Italian context. In addition to the attempt to highlight some theories on the teacher's non-verbal communication in the classroom, the contribution focuses attention on some specific aspects: facial expressions, non-verbal vocalizations, eye contact, posture, physical contact, behavior in space, clothing, etc.. This is to highlight the possible consequences of certain non-explicit behaviors on students' learning and, consequently, to highlight the need to consider these fundamental aspects in the improvement processes inherent to being in the classroom and in the promotion of a positive classroom climate.
