The ‘virtual’ historical-educational heritage: experiments and new perspectives

The common ground into which historical knowledge, techniques for creating digital environments and the tools of contemporary museology converge is called, by experts, Virtual cultural heritage, a recent field of research that aims at the virtual reconstruction of cultural heritage, useful for preserving, studying, enhancing and disseminating school cultural heritage. In compliance with internationally shared criteria and standards, an experiment has been launched by the “Center for Documentation and Research on the History of Educational Institutions” (UniMol) aimed at reconstructing, through 3D modeling, the training center of local elites in the pre-unification period in the Province of Molise, the Collegio Sannitico, and creating the digital archive of the texts in the Collegio’s library and the school papers produced by the pupils. The ultimate goal of the project is the creation of a Metaverse Museum, using the potential offered by innovative Metaverse-based platforms.
