Will micro-credentials and NOOCs counteract the demographic winter in universities?

Abstract:

With an ageing population and a shrinking cohort of university-age students, academic institutions are faced with the challenge of making university education more flexible and accessible. This contribution explores the potential of micro-credentials and NOOCs (Nano Open Online Courses) in counteracting the Demographic Winter in universities and analyses how these innovations can help to adapt educational activities to labour market needs and recognise skills acquired beyond traditional academic paths. Through a review of the literature and an analysis of current trends, the implications of these tools in addressing demographic challenges in universities are explored and a framework for their role in mitigating the effect of the demographic crisis is outlined.
